It’s likely that you’ve never heard of a frenectomy. And that's okay! While it’s a relatively new procedure, it's changing lives. A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the frenulum (the small fold of skin under your tongue). We've helped countless patients improve their quality of life through frenectomies. We believe that everyone deserves to live a life free from the discomfort and embarrassment caused by a tight frenulum.
Schedule an appointmentA tight frenulum can cause a range of issues, from difficulty speaking clearly to creating challenges for oral hygiene. A frenectomy can provide relief from these issues and improve your overall quality of life.
While anyone can benefit from this procedure, some people may be better candidates than others. If you're experiencing the following difficulties, speak to Dr. Mehta to explore whether a frenectomy might be for you:
A frenectomy is a relatively quick and straightforward procedure. Dr. Mehta performs this procedure under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. He will make a small incision in the frenulum and carefully release the tight tissue – it’s really that simple. This simplicity also means that the recovery time is usually minimal. Most of our patients return to their normal activities within a few days.
Many parents wonder if a frenectomy is right for their child. In some cases, a tight frenulum can interfere with breastfeeding or speech development and early intervention can often prevent problems from developing later in life. If you're concerned about your child's frenulum, it's important to talk to your pediatrician and Dr. Mehta for more information on the best course of action.
How long does a frenectomy take?
The duration of your procedure will vary based on your individual case, but it typically takes Dr. Mehtra between 15 and 30 minutes to complete. This timeframe includes the preparation, the actual procedure, and a short recovery period while the effects of the local anesthetic wear off.
Is a frenectomy painful?
While you may experience some discomfort during your procedure, most of our patients report minimal pain. We use locla anesthesia to numb the area, and any discomfort during your recovery can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Will I have any scarring?
Yes, you can expect some scarring from a frenectomy, but it is minimal and often fades over time.
Can I eat and drink normally after my procedure?
Yes, you can generally eat and drink normally after. However, we advise avoiding hot or spicy foods for the first few days. Soft foods and liquids can also be more comfortable during your recovery.
Ready to schedule? We look forward to meeting you.
