Why Tooth Extraction Might Be Necessary

A tooth extraction is when your tooth is completely removed from its socket. Well this might sound daunting, it can be necessary to help you maintain your oral health. Luckily for our patients, our years of experience performing tooth extractions, and access to the latest equipment, makes it easy for us to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure!

You might need a tooth extraction if you have…

  • Severe Tooth Decay: When a cavity becomes too large to fill, and your tooth is beyond repair, an extraction may be the best course of action to prevent infection.
  • Tooth Abscess: A severe infection can lead to an abscess. If antibiotics and root canal treatment don’t solve your problem, an extraction might be necessary.
  • Impacted Wisdom Teeth: Wisdom teeth that haven’t erupted properly can cause pain, infection, or damage to your surrounding teeth. Tooth extractions can prevent further complications.
  • Orthodontic Treatment: Sometimes, it’s necessary to extract teeth to create space for your teeth to move into alignment for your orthodontic journey.
  • Tooth Trauma: A severely damaged tooth due to an injury might require extraction.

Your Extraction Process

Before the Procedure

Before we start, Dr. Mehta will take the time to get to know you and your teeth better. We’ll talk about the procedure, all the whys and hows, and answer any questions you might have. He’ll also ask questions about any existing conditions you’re taking. Dr. Mehta will also take X-rays to get a clearer image of your tooth and its roots. But don’t worry – we’ll make sure you’re comfortable with numbing gel or sedation.

During the Procedure

Next, it's time for the extraction. Dr. Mehta will gently extract your tooth and, if necessary, he’ll shape the bone or gum tissue to help you heal more smoothly. If needed, he can also stitch things up to give the area a helping hand in recovery.

After the Procedure

After your extraction, we’ll place a gauze pad where the extracted tooth was to help stop the bleeding. Dr. Mehta will also recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to manage post-procedure discomfort.

Tips for Recovery

  • Avoid strenuous activities for the first few days.
  • Stick to soft foods for the first few days to avoid disturbing the extraction site.
  • Gently brush and floss your teeth, but avoid the extraction site.
  • Apply ice packs to reduce swelling in the first 24 hours.
  • Follow Dr. Mehta’s instructions for pain medication and antibiotics.
  • Schedule a follow-up appointment to check on the healing process.
