You take care of your teeth, right? You brush, you floss, and you visit your dentist regularly. But have you ever considered the possibility of oral cancer? Oral cancer is a serious condition that affects the mouth, lips, and throat. While it might not be the first thing on your mind when you schedule a dental checkup, it’s an essential part of your overall health. And while it's a scary thought, the good news is that oral cancer is highly treatable when caught early, making early detection with Dr. Mehta a must.
Book a consultationOur oral cancer screenings are quick and painless, and they’re included in your regular dental exam! Dr. Mehta will carefully examine your mouth, lips, tongue, and neck to check for any abnormalities – this includes looking for unusual lumps, sores, or white or red patches.
The screening itself usually only takes a few minutes and, after your exam, Dr. Mehta will discuss the results with you and let you know if any further evaluation is needed. We know you that you might be nervous about the possibility of finding something but rest assured that most oral abnormalities are benign. However, it's still essential to get changes checked out by a professional.
While anyone can develop oral cancer, there are certain factors that can increase your risk. These include:
It’s important to note that having one or more of these risk factors doesn’t mean you will definitely develop oral cancer. But it does mean you should be extra vigilant about your oral health and schedule regular checkups.
Reflections Dental Group is committed to your dental well-being. Dr. Mehta and his experienced team have a keen eye for spotting the potential signs of oral cancer and use the latest technology to provide thorough and accurate screenings.
We also understand that many of our patients feel anxious to visit the dentist, which is why we've created a comfortable environment where you can feel relaxed while our friendly staff puts your mind at ease.
How often should I get an oral cancer screening?
We recommend getting an oral cancer screening at least once a year as part of your regular dental checkup. If you have any risk factors, we may recommend that you get them more frequently.
Do you offer oral cancer screenings for new patients?
Absolutely! Our practice welcomes new patients and offers comprehensive oral cancer screenings as part of your initial exam.
What happens if something abnormal is found during my screening?
If we find anything unusual during your screening, we'll discuss your options with you and recommend further evaluation or treatment to help you tackle it head on.
By making healthy lifestyle choices, such as quitting smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and protecting yourself from excessive sun exposure, you can reduce your risk of oral cancer. However, early detection is the key to successful treatment. We're here to help you protect your smile – schedule your oral cancer screening today.
